How to pack a flat-screen TV

What is the first thing to do when getting your TV ready to be packed? To unplug it, of course, and remove the power cord from the TV, if possible. Then, try to remove the cords that attach any accessories, such as DVD players and streaming devices. For easier using later, coil them up and tie the coil together with a rope or ribbon.

Remove all the cords

  • Once you remove the cords, put them in a separate box or in the box you are using to pack up your components. Don’t place them in the same box as the TV could damage it if they move around.
  • If you have a lot of components and cables, it’s a good idea to take a picture and label them before you pack them. Put a piece of tape around the cord and write down where it should go. This will help you put your TV system back together once your move is over.
  • Then wrap up attached cords. In the case that there are cords that can’t be detached from the TV, you should wrap them up tidy. You don’t have to wrap them up all the way to the TV. You simply need to wrap up the majority of the cord so it won’t be a tripping hazard while you are packing up the TV.

Unmount your TV

If your TV is mounted on a wall, you need to take it down. First, you should detach the TV from the bracket and then take the bracket off the wall after the TV is removed.

Soft wrapping materials

Purchase a variety of soft wrapping materials you can use to pad the TV. This includes bubble wrap, packing paper or newsprint, and moving blankets. Also, you can use materials that you are already going to move, such as regular blankets, clothes, and linens. They can pad your TV and be the packing material instead of an item to be packed. Hence, you will save money for packing supplies.

Cushioning is a key

Cushioning is really important if you want to pack a flat-screen TV properly and avoid the damage in the transfer. Wrap the TV in the soft packing materials or your blankets and linens. Once the whole TV is completely wrapped, tape the padding carefully. Wrap the entire TV before taping, this way you will make sure that the tape does not get on the TV, and possibly damage the screen. Put the foam pieces in the box along with wrapped TV in order to protect it from shifting. Then, place two of these on at a time and secure them using stretch plastic wrap. Use this wrap to cover the entire TV and prevent possible scratches.

Harlem moving companies use special packaging for fragile items like flats screen TV, if you want to be sure, you can even ask for single item service. When packing it by yourself, can also use blankets, furniture pads or sheets to cover the TV.

Prepare the box

It would be great if you could find a box that is relatively close to the dimensions of your TV. Interestingly, some moving companies even sell flat screen TV boxes. But if you cannot find one, you can always purchase 1-2 wardrobe boxes instead. Then, you can cut these and assemble them in a way to create your own DIY flat screen TV box. You should adequately seal all sides of the box with packing tape to ensure it and then pack a flat-screen TV. Make sure to keep the TV upright when placing in a box.

Secure the TV in the box

Use blankets, foam pieces, bubble wrap or some other furniture pads to fill any gaps you see in between the top of the box and the TV. That will prevent the TV from shifting while packed in the box during the transport.

Move and keep the box upright

When you pack a flat-screen TV using your DIY box, make sure there is no wiggle room. Leaving space for shifting is one of the packing mistakes you should avoid. If you think it’s necessary, add more bubble wrap to fill in the gaps. Also, make sure to put your TV stand in the box so you don’t lose it. When you or your movers load the box into a moving truck, be sure to keep it upright all the time. Try storing it next to your dresser, mattress or some other flat and sturdy objects.

Humidity alert

If you need to pack a flat-screen TV and move it internationally or you are packing the flat screen TV for long term storage, you’ll want to think about humidity. You need to keep the humidity away from your electronics. Look up some silica gel packets and place them around the TV before wrapping it. This will absorb any possible moisture that might enter the box over time. Happy moving!
