Relocating is never easy. It’s ranked third in the most stressful things a person can experience in their life. Apart from dealing with movers and figuring out how your new life is going to look like, there are a number of emotional issues to resolve. Leaving your old life behind may be a good thing, but it won’t be easy. Here are a couple of ways which will help you with coming to terms with moving.
Keeping in touch with close people
The first thing to do when going to a new place is to let people help you as much as they can. We live in the information age and contacting people has never been easier. Use that. Loneliness is one of the biggest contributors to increased stress and can easily lead to depression. You may be moving precisely to get away from the people that were close to you and, hey we hear you. But if you do have someone that is willing to be there for you, be sure to let them help you. Text with them, call them, Skype them whatever suits you best. The new world is probably going to be rough. The more you get used to it the easier it’s going to get, but for starters don’t let yourself be alone with all the new emotions and thoughts. If you keep them bottled up they will overwhelm you. Just having someone to listen will do you mountains of good.
Get a pet
Physical contact is proven to be very therapeutical beneficial. Consider getting yourself a furry friend to help you along with coming to terms with moving. Find out if your new place allows having pets and if it does, consider getting one as soon as possible. Whether it’s better to have a dog or a cat comes to personal preference, but anyone of those will do you good. Cats tend to be better if you want to be more indoors while dogs are more for outgoing people so you should figure out your lifestyle in order to not make your pets needlessly suffer.
Stay healthy
Any big change in our environment has an effect on our body. In order to avoid getting sick, you should take some precautions and start having some healthy habits. A healthy body has a healthy spirit. Hormones play a big part in what kind of emotions we are having and therefore should be taken very seriously. In order to keep your hormones regulated you should be mindful of the food you eat, using and moving your body and getting quality rest.
Eat proper foods
Usual misconceptions when it comes to regulating diet is that you have to start starving yourself. That is not only wrong but dangerous. Start eating healthy usually means lowering your sugar and caffeine intake and making vegetables, meats and fruit your primary source of nourishment. You can easily find online recipes for healthy meals that can sustain you and will keep you healthy. Consider learning how to cook your favorite meals. It doesn’t matter if they are not particularly healthy. You are not going to eat them every day. But once a week you should treat yourself with some comfort food and eat a meal that gives you a sense of warmth and closeness.
Get some exercise
Exercise is vital. You might think that you are too old to start exercising. But no. In fact the older you are the more you will need to exercise. We, human beings, were not made to sit all day long. We were made to move and to enjoy our bodies. You just need to find the kind of movement that suits you best. Are you competitive? Do you enjoy being a part of a team or do you like doing things solo? Would you rather lift heavy things or run for a long time? You don’t know? Who cares!? Start anything. Start exploring. The chances that you will right away start doing what suits you best are minimal. Especially if you aren’t used to being in contact with your body. Then they are zero. Go at it at your own pace, just be sure to start. Remember you are not supposed to suffer while you do it. A body that feels good will immensely help you with coming to terms with moving.
Quality sleep
Sleep can hardly be overrated. In today’s fast and competitive times you can easily see people neglecting their sleep. And if you look carefully you will soon see the effects that will have. Sleep helps us regulate our stress and give us the energy to be productive the next day. No amount of napping combined with caffeine and sugar can substitute a good nights sleep. And considering that you will spend a third of your life doing it, it is wise to invest in it. Get a good mattress and a good pillow.
In order to relax before sleeping, you can do some relaxing exercises like yoga and deep breathing. Avoid looking at bright screens at least an hour before going to bed. If you are having trouble falling asleep, don’t stay and get restless in bed. Go out for a walk or read. Sleep is natural and shouldn’t be forced. Avoid pharmaceutical sleeping aids as they will interfere with your natural sleeping mechanisms. If none of this helps, consider visiting a sleep specialist or a therapist. It may seem like a lot of effort, but whoever has suffered from insomnia will be sure to tell just how important sleep is.
Take your time when coming to terms with moving
Keep all of the things we mentioned in mind and go slow. You will need to work both with yourself and on yourself when it comes to coming to terms with moving. And to do that properly you have to give yourself time to both feel and think about what’s going on. Go slow but steady. Good luck!
