As the moving day approaches you should start thinking about how you are going to pack different areas of the house. Some items will be much easier to pack than others. And while packing your attic before moving might seem scary, it really isn’t. Most of your work will be revolving around decluttering it. And deciding what to bring with you. But the whole process can easily turn out to be fun and sometimes even emotional.

First steps in packing your attic before moving

Packing an attic isn’t hard. But it’s not as straightforward as packing your bedroom, for example. There are a few tasks that you need to complete before you start packing. Attics are usually places that we don’t spend much time in. They are often dirty, neglected, and filled with many different items. Some of which you won’t be bringing with you when relocating to Manhattan. So, before you start buying packing supplies, you need to declutter. Some items will be moved to storage, some will come with you and some will inevitably have to be thrown away.

One of the first things that you should do is to declutter your attic

Decluttering your attic before moving

While decluttering your attic might seem like a straightforward task, it usually isn’t. And in most cases it’s not because of the number of items there are stored there. It has much more to do with sentimental clutter in your attic. Especially if you’ve lived in that house for a very long time. It’s hard to let go of some of the items that are dear to your heart. But, in the end, you’ll have part with at least some of the items stored there.

Throw away unusable items

The first thing that you need to do is to locate items that don’t have any sentimental value and are unusable. Those items should go straight to the trash. It’s important to be responsible. And recycle by the rules. But, anything that doesn’t serve a purpose should be discarded. While those items don’t cost anything sitting in your attach. They will become an expense when you have to pay for transportation costs for them.

Separate sentimental items first

Separate sentimental and useful items

After you’ve cleared the junk from your attic, it’s time to deal with what is left. So, separating sentimental items from the ones that are still usable should be a priority. You want to simplify packing and unpacking as much as possible. Take a big box, or two, and place all the sentimental items in it. You’ll be packing them later, don’t worry about that now. What you need to worry about is what to do with usable items that don’t hold any sentimental value. You have a few options:

  • Take them with you
  • Sell them
  • Donate them
  • Throw them away

Packing your attic before moving is straightforward

Now that everything is nice and clear it’s time to take the first steps towards packing. And you should start by making a list of everything that you will be bringing with you. There are many benefits to it. Firstly, it will be much easier to shop for packing supplies when you know what you need to pack. Secondly, Financial District movers will be able to provide you with a much more accurate moving estimate. There are many items that can impact your relocation price stored in your attic:

  • Furniture
  • Old electronics, like PCs and TVs
  • Fragile items

And finally, packing your attic before moving will be much less complicated when you have a clear list in front of you. So, start with smaller items and work your way towards larger ones.

Packing sentimental items

One of the first things that you should pack is sentimental items. They, arguably, hold the most value. And you need to keep them safe. Start by gently cleaning them. And enjoy the hours you will spend walking down the memory lane. But, after that, it’s time to start thinking about packing. They can come in all shapes and sizes. So you’ll need to pick the right size moving boxes for them. That’s where your list will come in handy. Shopping for moving boxes is much easier when you know what you need to pack in advance.

Take care of the fragile items next

After you’ve secured your sentimental items it’s time to deal with delicate ones. They can also come in all shapes and sizes. But, they present a bit of a challenge. They can easily break during relocation. So, in some cases, you’ll need to use specialty moving boxes in order to keep them safe. Make sure you clearly label them so the movers from Heart Movers will know what to look out for. Some of the most common fragile items are Christmas decorations. Some of which might be very old and quite fragile. So, don’t save your money on the protective wrap for them. It’s better to overprotect them than to have them break.

Packing furniture from your attic before moving

The old furniture is usually something that you can find in the attic. And there’s probably a good reason why you kept it. It can come in handy when you are moving into a new home. But, in order for it to remain in a good condition, you need to know how to protect your furniture when moving. You need to be very careful when removing it from the attic and when cleaning it. Especially if it’s antique furniture that can have a significant monetary value. So, consult with your movers. And have them move it and bring it into your new home. Something that just didn’t fit into your house might become a centerpiece of your new home.

Packing your attic is both fun and emotional

While most people don’t like packing, attics are different. They are filled with items that you have forgotten. Items that will take you down the memory lane. And you never know what you will find. But, all of that can take a lot of your time. So, start early and go slowly. And in no time your attic will be cleared out. And items will be packed and ready for a new life in a new home.
